We are making changes to the Medium Level Verification (P5) journey to improve the success rate of users registering for an NHS login and matching to their record in the Personal Demographics System (PDS).

The changes include:

• when a user is unsuccessful using a P5 demographic route (for example, name, date of birth and postcode), they will be presented with alternative routes that may help them complete verification, such as using their NHS number
• if we are unable to locate a user's record in PDS, we will provide guidance on registering with a GP practice.
• once a user has exhausted the available P5 routes and reviewed the supporting guidance, they will no longer be able to proceed to P9. Instead, they will be shown an information screen outlining the actions available to help them complete their P5 registration successfully

Previously, users who were unsuccessful in P5 could proceed to P9. However, a significant proportion of these users subsequently failed P9, resulting in a poor user experience, unnecessary completion of the P9 application process, additional PYI costs for NHS login, and increased manual ID checking activity. 

As part of this change, additional controls will also be introduced to prevent the creation of duplicate NHS login P9 applications.

The changes will initially be rolled out to 20% of users. Following successful validation and monitoring, the rollout will be expanded to all NHS login P5 users.

What’s new

Currently when a user is logging into a service using NHS login, they receive a One Time Passcode (OTP) to their registered telephone number which they input. At the bottom of this screen, beneath the enter OTP field, there is an option for the user to select to set 'Remember my Device’, so they don't have to receive an OTP each time they login.

We are moving the 'Remember my Device' option and guidance text to a new screen, which will be the screen after the user has entered their OTP. The functionality is exactly the same, it is the positioning of the functionality which is changing to help users see the Remember My Device option.

We’ve added a new essential cookie to support secure login. It’s set after you enter your username and password and helps complete two-factor authentication (a verification code, for example). This cookie is temporary and expires at the end of your session.

What's new
When a passkey is removed from an account via Settings, the passkey is now also removed from autofill suggestions for all future login attempts. This update applies to Windows devices and Android devices where a new passkey is registered after this release.
