Request received for the number of mental health inpatients with a length of stay 365+ days, nationally, including breakdowns for open referrals, inpatients discharged within the financial year and inpatients discharged within the month of March at the end of each financial year.

Our response

We provided data from the Mental Health Services Dataset (MHSDS) from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2026, the national count of:

  1. Mental health inpatients with an open referral and length of stay 365+ days
  2. Mental health inpatients discharged within the financial year with a length of stay 365+ days
  3. Mental health inpatients discharged within the month of March with a length of stay 365+ days, for each given year
