CIS2 Authentication release 12.01

CIS2 Authentication will release version 12.01 on 24 August 2026, subject to final approval.

Smartcard expiry notification message

We've added a smartcard expiry notification message and instructions for renewal to the authentication journey.

What this means for you

If you are authenticating using CIS2 Smartcard Connect and your smartcard is due to expire, you will now see an expiry notification message at the following intervals:

• 90 days before expiry
• 30 days before expiry
• 14 days before expiry
• every day for the final last 7 days until expiry

Users will need to acknowledge the message in order to continue authenticating.

This is an example of the expiry message shown when there is more than 1 day remaining before expiry.

This is an example of the final expiry message, when there is less than 1 day remaining before expiry.

Why we are doing this

Some users may not know that their smartcard is due to expire. The notification message will let them know in plenty of time to self-renew their smartcard to avoid their smartcard being blocked and needing to contact a Registration Authority to renew it.
