Summary

In 2024/2025, some pathology laboratories in England reported a positive bias in HbA1c results obtained using a particular model of analyser. This resulted in various reports of people being incorrectly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or non-diabetic hyperglycaemia (NDH).

This report provides comparative analysis of numbers of people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or NDH between January 2024 and March 2025 (against the count of newly diagnosed people from the same month the previous year) in order to explore impact of the analyser issue, split by practices facing an affected pathology laboratory and a control group. The affected practice groups and control groups were assigned to an ICB and results are presented at a national and ICB level.

The laboratories and corresponding NHS Trusts that were affected are listed on the methodology page. You can also read about how the affected practices and control groups were assigned.
